What Is Threads, How Do You Use it & Is It Better Than Twitter?

In this day and age of social media, expressing our thoughts and engaging in conversations with others has become an integral part of our lives. Twitter has been a pioneer in short-form communication, with its 280-character limit since 2006. However, as conversations grew complex, users often found themselves limited by this constraint.

Enter Threads, a new platform that expands the possibilities of online discussions. In this blog, we’ll explore what Threads is, how to use it, and why it’s a significant leap forward compared to Twitter.

What is Threads?

Threads is Meta’s brand-new app and is a platform designed to facilitate seamless and coherent conversations online. Mark Zuckerburg has released a brand-new app that is a direct competitor of Twitter, and unlike traditional social media platforms, Threads focuses on presenting conversations in a threaded format. Instead of being limited to a single post or tweet, users can connect and organize related thoughts and replies, creating a more comprehensive and structured dialogue.

The Threads app received 5 million sign-ups in its first four hours of being live with now over 100 million users to date. According to Meta, it is the most rapidly downloaded app of all time, with a large number of brands, celebrities and other prominent figures already using and engaging with the app.

This free app is designed to be a space “where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what will be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favourite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.”

How Do You Use Threads?

Create a Tread: To start a conversation on Threads, simply create a new thread. You can initiate it by posting your thoughts or a question, and then others can respond directly to your post, creating a branching structure for the conversation.

Respond and Engage: Threads encourages users to engage in meaningful discussions. When someone replies to your initial post, you can respond directly to their comment, creating a sub-thread within the larger conversation. This enables more focused discussions while maintaining the overall context.

Explore Branches: One of the significant advantages of Threads is its ability to handle multiple branches within a conversation. Users can delve into different aspects or tangents of a discussion without cluttering the main thread. This feature allows for deeper exploration and a better understanding of different viewpoints.

Follow and Participate: Threads provide an intuitive interface to follow and participate in conversations. Users can easily track conversations they’re interested in and receive notifications when new replies are posted. This makes it effortless to stay up-to-date and actively engage with ongoing discussions.

How Do I Sign Up?

You need an Instagram account to log into threads, once you sign in you can follow the same people you did on Instagram with a click of a button – or you can individually select people to follow. One thing to bear in mind is if you want to delete your Threads account, you’ll need to delete your Instagram as well. Thankfully you can deactivate or pause your account without having to take down your Instagram.

So, Why Is Threads Better Than Twitter?

Both apps are very similar, both have newsfeeds, like and comment buttons, and the ability to repost. The character limit for Threads is 500 with Twitter only having 250. Threads also has the ability to post videos up to 5 minutes as well as being able to link threads directly to Instagram posts and stories keeping one of the most loved and used social media platforms only a touch away.

Contextual Organization: Unlike Twitter, where conversations are often fragmented across multiple tweets and replies, Threads excels in organising discussions. By visually representing the hierarchy of replies and sub-threads, Threads provides a clearer understanding of the flow and context of the conversation.

Simplified Engagement: Threads simplifies the process of participating in discussions. With direct replies and the ability to create sub-threads, it becomes easier to engage in focused conversations and maintain coherent dialogue. This encourages meaningful interactions and reduces the noise often found on platforms like Twitter.

Deeper Exploration: Twitter’s character limit often hinders in-depth exploration of complex topics. Threads, on the other hand, allows for detailed conversations by accommodating longer replies and branching discussions. This facilitates a more comprehensive exploration of ideas, fostering intellectual growth and deeper connections.

Enhanced Collaboration: Threads is particularly valuable for collaborative discussions, whether it’s within professional communities or creative endeavours. The ability to structure conversations, refer back to previous points, and collaborate seamlessly makes it an ideal platform for brainstorming, problem-solving, and sharing knowledge.

Threads, whether as a feature on Twitter or as a hypothetical standalone platform, presents a powerful way to engage in organised and comprehensive conversations online. As social media continues to evolve, the importance of effective communication and meaningful interactions cannot be overstated.
