A Day In The Life Of A Digital Marketing Apprentice At Talking Stick Digital

Written by Amelia Crisp

Ever wondered what a Digital Marketing Apprentice at Talking Stick Digital gets up to? Our newest Apprentice Adele is here to let you in on all the exclusive insights, from tea breaks, the wonderful office space, the office pup, and of course the day-to-day duties.

Backstory

Originally, a Digital Marketing Apprenticeship was never in my life plan. I completed my Textile Degree through the pandemic, and although I loved the creativity and imagination that this career path would take me, after finishing my degree (and applying for a few local jobs) I realised that living in Somerset was a very tricky location to get the textile related job that I wanted. Digital-wise, I always flourished with this, if that was with creating prints, patterns, and mood boards on Photoshop, or writing blogs for my dissertation, the digital components of my degree was thrilling to me. On reflection, this made me question whether I was choosing the wrong career path. Back in college my photography teacher once said to me “Adele you need a career where you are sticking to a brief, creating things with a purpose”. And she was correct. A career in digital marketing does exactly that, ensuring that the client’s company progresses by promoting products and building brand awareness.

I came across the Digital Marketing Apprenticeship at Talking Stick Digital on Indeed. The process was easy and simple, and all controlled through my apprenticeship provider Apprentify. Communication was constant, and I obtained an online interview with Talking Stick Digital that ended with me buzzing about the possibility of embarking on a new journey with a friendly, and positive company. Long story short, I got the role and am throwing myself headfirst into learning all about digital marketing.

Day-To-Day Duties

No two days are the same working at Talking Stick Digital – the variation of one to the next is exciting, with so many components including PPC (pay-per-click), SEO (search engine optimisation), content writing, and social media.

My day begins with the usual trip to the office kitchen, a generous space with coffee and tea-making facilities, a fridge, and two microwaves (that’s right). I make my fruit tea, put my lunch in the fridge and walk down the hall to the office – a bright and airy space with posters, plants, and views of Bridgwater’s canal. Then there is the usual quick cuddle with Trevor, my boss’s cute (and sometimes needy) Cockapoo. And it is time to start my to-do list of jobs.

Depending on my schedule, I normally start the day (unless it’s weekly or monthly reports) with content writing. This is one of my favourite aspects, there’s something about creative writing in the morning that I love. These are usually the bigger tasks so for me it’s better to complete these first thing. We write blogs for many of our clients to improve their keywords and keyword ranking, and to improve links on and off their websites. Optimisations are similar, but these are editing what’s already written instead of writing from a blank page. Once I have completed this, I email it over to the Digital Account Manager Emma, just so she can check it first before it gets sent over to the client. That is the first tick off my daily checklist.

Up until lunch, which we take around 1 pm, my tasks are varied and include topics like PPC with campaign building – either by creating these on Excel and then uploading via Google Ads Editor or creating campaigns straight on Google Ads. We have a range of clients with different products so the creation of campaigns can be varied. Before my apprenticeship, I had never used Excel, so it has been great to get to grips with new software. Another task could be an analysis, and this could be in the form of a competitor analysis by looking at the client’s competitors to either see which keywords they are ranking for, or how well their ads are performing. This is something we do on a frequent basis to keep up with the high competition.

By this time my stomach is starting to rumble and that indicates it’s time for lunch. Outside the office, we share a communal facility with multiple seating areas including sofas, bean bags, and a table with swinging chairs (how cool). There are five of us, including me, that sit outside for lunch, and Trev joins us too – his puppy eyes gazing up at us in the hope he’ll get a piece of food. Sometimes he’s too cute to say no to. Or sometimes he sits on his favourite bean bag whilst we eat.

After lunch, I check my emails to see if there are any updates and then carry on with my list. My afternoon can be varied, sometimes I have some more content writing tasks or campaign builds, and occasionally I have some social media tasks. Amelia, who has nearly completed her apprenticeship, oversees the social media side, and to help her out with the heavy workload I can have a range of social tasks to get on with including writing Instagram captions, creating Facebook Ads, and using Canva to create engaging Instagram stories – this allows me to add my own creative flair!

For my Apprentify side of my apprenticeship, I have an online learning platform where I keep up with tasks and a study log, and I also have monthly classrooms where I learn all about the different topics of digital marketing and engage with my peers. For my off-the-job time, I have allocated training Fridays to complete both my Apprentify tasks and extra Talking Stick training tasks.
